Opportunities for athletics participation also exist through the college’s intramural programs. Volleyball, beach volleyball, basketball, soccer, flag football, softball and various other activities are available at the intramural level.

SCAD Savannah competes in 16 intercollegiate varsity sports. The college holds numerous lectures, performances and film screenings at two historic theaters it owns, the Trustees Theater and the Lucas Theatre for the Arts. There also is a juried competition. The festival consists primarily of the chalk-drawing competition, which is divided into group and individual categories of students, alumni and prospective students. Similar is the Sand Arts Festival.

This sand festival is held every spring on the beaches of nearby Tybee Island. Contestants can work alone or in groups of up to four people. The competition is divided into sand relief, sand sculpture, sand castle and wind sculpture divisions.

That same year, the school also canceled commencement exercises following several pipe-bomb explosions on campus. After years of legal battles and an out-of-court settlement, the School of Visual Arts closed its Savannah branch.

SCAD was the first art school in the country to have an athletics program and is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Fencing and cheerleading are offered as club sports. The campus includes more than sixty facilities in one of the largest and most renowned National Historic Landmark districts. SCAD-Atlanta opened for classes in with seventy-seven students. SCAD is an important part of the Savannah, Atlanta, and Lacoste communities, providing educational and cultural events for the public.

Since deFINE Art, a popular public event, has brought noted contemporary artists to Atlanta and Savannah for lectures, exhibitions, and discussion programs. Students and faculty have performed many community-service projects, including assessing historic-structure damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in coastal Mississippi; building houses with Habitat for Humanity ; participating in Hands On Atlanta projects; developing plans for a LEED-certified building for Park Place Outreach Inc.

Expanding into the Victorian district and south of the downtown area, SCAD has become a guardian for previously abandoned historic buildings and now inhabits more than 2 million square feet in more than sixty facilities in Savannah. While preserving the character and integrity of its historic buildings, SCAD offers state-of-the-art, industry-standard technology and tools in all its programs.
