Rowing a boat through the swamp is free and you get up and close with tons of gators, it’s amazing. There is also a little aquarium and nice gift shop. The snow cone stand is a perfect touch on a hot day, too.

They do a good job exhibiting and explaining archaeological evidence from the area, they cover the history and construction of the canal and the site, the development of a very primitive attack submarine used during battles off the coast of SC and the natural fauna as well.

Slide 1 of 4. The Avian Conservation Center is a bird sanctuary for birds of prey like the eagle, owl, hawk, and the falcon. The center actively rescues and provides shelter to these birds and is open for tourists who are passionate about these amazing creatures. The staff is very caring and there are countless cases of injured birds who were found and taken to the center, and were nursed back to health.

Where do I begin? My husband and I traveled from out of state and are huge owl fans, so the center was kind enough to arrange a private tour for us. We got to spend almost two hours with the director and met many amazing birds up close. They do incredible work at the center for the bird population – from medical to rescue to conservation work. Really passionate about their work and such welcoming people.

The facility is incredibly maintained, well-organized, beautiful. If you’re in Charleston, absolutely visit this beautiful destination.

Great tour! I will however desuade anyone who isn’t in the best shape from taking this perticular your. Just to get to the beach is around a mile and a half. Then if you want to go to the bone yard which is awesome it’s another mile and a half. That’s one 1 way though so you still have all that way to walk back. As someone not so physically fit I definitely struggled a lot and am definitely quite sore afterwards.

That being said it was a great tour. The guide was great. He stopped when there were good places to take pictures and seemed to know the area quite well. I did enjoy it even though it was a much longer walk than I anticipated or wanted. All in all I probably wouldn’t go on this one again just because of the distance.

Another thing to keep in mind is the bugs. They will devour you alive if you forget bug spray like I did. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing a shirt or not. They go right through it. And his enthusiasm and knowledge was infectious. The afternoon tea was fantastic, the chef is amazing and our server Augusta was most friendly and took pleasure in answering all of our questions. And we even ended up having a interesting conversation with Mr Beattie the owner of the home and resident until last year. He was having lunch right next to us. What a day! If you ever get a chance, this is a South Carolina gem worthwhile visiting.

Oh and Butternut the cat is most friendly! My family had our own private tour of the plantation house learning about the old rice plantation and the history of the past owners. Since we’re not huge on history, it wasn’t really our cup of tea, but it was quiet and away from the bustle of Charleston.

My kids loved the cat who followed them around for a while outside, but were a bit bored with the history lesson. Photos are not allowed in the house itself, which was unfortunate given some of the cool features of the house such as the melting candle accents on several of the rooms’ moldings. Given the huge crowds heading to other plantations in the area, this was definitely a breath of fresh air to explore.

The property is gorgeous especially for a May wedding – I had to use it all and I did! The harbor walk area, the terrace, the front porch, the lawn – all were major key elements that made my wedding memorable. I had approximately guests that fit nicely on the side terrace. We all agreed the place was lovely, but we thought the zoo has no place at these gardens. The animals are in small and poor conditions. The enclosed aviary had dead fish floating in the water. Not just one or two. Lots of dead fish. The enclosed swimming tank for the otter was heart breaking. Their outside area stunk. The owls looked pitiful.

The animals really should be sent to an establishment that is designed to help and care for these creatures. Just let this be the beautiful outside museum of art that it is. State park. This is a heavenly oasis for nature lovers!! Oh the birds and peaceful solitude!! Some campsites can hear the ocean. The nature center offers great activities for kids! This park is a fantastic place to ride your bike! Well worth the daily price of admission! One of the most wonderful special gems on the east coast.

This park was great and family friendly. The beach access was close enough to walk and the views were incredible. There are many large open green spaces for the children to run and play together. The oak trees are beautiful. Shore fishing was a huge perk for the family. The whole family enjoyed the self guided tour of the castle too! The only downfall was how early the park store closed when looking to purchase some fire wood.

This was an amazing little getaway on a public beach. My family and I didn’t camp here but that’s also an option as well. Beatiful place to enjoy the scenery and watch birds in the morning, a lot of great choices to enjoy your lunch and dinner.

Has a outdoor bar with live music at certain times, access to the beach, arcade and shop inside. I was here on Wednesday so the crowds were very low, very few fishing. It was windy but very nice.
