We left Asheville a year ago mostly because of the crime, the traffic and the overall decline in quality of life. Why would they? Asheville is not desirable anymore and that is also for a lot of reasons and a lot of those reasons have to do with greed in Corporatism. Asheville has become a beer town with an art problem.

Its amenities are overrated. Asheville is infested with panhandlers pretending to be homeless and the police are not allowed to run them off.

Certainly there were a lot of outside agitators from far right organizations coming in but the local police were out of control and perhaps they were provoked into becoming out of control.

Asheville has gone through quite a few police chiefs over the years so it would seem that perhaps there are members of the department that are unmanageable. It used to be one of the best places to live. The quality of life descended so rapidly that we had to leave for safety of a family and a peace of mind. In addition to that healthcare in western North Carolina is atrocious and the city allowed one of the most criminal companies in the world hospital corporation of America to take over mission hospital.

The medical mafia is thriving in western North Carolina. Criminality in Healthcare is common all over the country but it is worse in Asheville and western North Carolina. The upside to us leaving as we got a lot of money for a property there. The day we left there were three shootings. Or login with Facebook, Google or Yahoo! Calendar Classifieds Guides. After further requests, the department gave a list that assigned the rapes to neighborhoods or regions, though some were vague. The Citizen-Times used that and other available data to try to assign neighborhoods to the incidents. Police later agreed to confirm some of those, though there were no exact locations and two couldn’t be assigned to neighborhoods. There was also confusion about the South French Broad incidents as to whether they occurred in neighborhood boundaries.

The Citizen-Times left the rapes off an interactive online crime map it produced in order to protect victims. Conant, the East West Asheville resident and open data activist, said exact details of rapes shouldn’t be released, but police should do more to tell residents about that type of serious crime in their neighborhoods. At 46, reported rapes in were at their highest level since at least The second-highest year for the crime was with For one thing, rapes are likely the most under-reported of the serious violent crimes, those who work with sexual violence victims say.

There is still a stigma,” said Angelica Wind, director of Our Voice, a nonprofit that works in Buncombe County’s Family Justice Center, assisting sexual violence victims. That’s particularly true among “marginalized” groups, Wind said, such as the poor, minorities and immigrants. The nonprofit counted a total of 52 people who either filed reports or came in contact with the organization after saying they were victims of sexual violence in As for the East West Asheville numbers, one reason for the uptick might be new people with more wealth and better access to resources moving there, Wind said.

Conant and Chase said they felt there was a greater sensitivity to crime in general from new residents. Another reason that could be behind the overall uptick is the campaign by sexual violence victim advocates and police to make it easier to report crimes. That includes the creation of the Family Justice Center. In the first three months of being in the center, July-September, Our Voice saw a percent increase in people seeking victims services, Wind said.

There are well over 1, apartments and condominiums downtown, according to city staff, but it’s not clear how many people live there since it’s not known how many of those units are primary residences and how many are usually empty or rented out on a short-term basis to tourists. But it is known that thousands of tourists, city residents and commuters come to the city center every year for work or pleasure.

If you find a place you like just name the street don’t need to give specific address and folks should be able to let you know. However, any decent looking rental shouldn’t be in an area of concern.

Well that’s not exactly accurate. Prostitution and drug problems around both the ball fields, Mission, and Livingston have been problems. I’m sure there are other areas of well.

Asheville offers a lot of neighborhoods with loads of on-site amenities. Here are a few of our favorites. Outside of Asheville are numerous small towns, and many have that Mayberry small town feel. These towns are all inherently safe, providing great options for people wanting a quiet yet socially active lifestyle. Many people move to the Asheville area to live in one of these small towns where they can walk to their favorite coffee shop or restaurant, take their dog everywhere they go, and meet new neighbors in town.

So there are numerous options for safe, quiet, small-town living in the areas around Asheville. Here are some references to research crime in and around Asheville, NC. However, residents of townships and municipalities such as Black Mountain, Biltmore Forest, Montreat, Weaverville, and Woodfin receive their primary law enforcement services from their municipal police department.

There is also a national sex offender database provided by the U. Department of Justice. Both are available free to the public.

Well that’s not exactly accurate. Prostitution and drug problems around both the ball fields, Mission, and Livingston have been problems. I’m sure there are other areas of well.

We have little random violent crime not related to things like domestic violence or drug use but it’s still a small city of , so there are still a lot of problem folks. Using a little common sense should keep you out of trouble, but avoid using it and you are still are going to find yourself knee deep in something. We’ve had 2 places in 2 different statistically safe places broken into in just a few years, one while we were home.

It’s a relatively safe area, but crime is still above the national average I’ve been to Mission and the numerous parks and ball fields in Asheville and not once seen this. Can you post a link to back up your assertions?

I’m sure that if this is true that there would be arrests or stories about police operations in those areas. Also your perception of safety and criminal activity could quite possibly be different from mine and the OP.

Also do you even live in Asheville? Where I live outside Weaverville, I’m within an easy walk of homes worth a half-million or more and trailers that may well have a negative value. Neighborhood residents worry there’s too much public safety focus on Asheville’s commercial and tourism hub. The data buoy that concern. Conant’s East West Asheville neighborhood covers a broad, hilly swath rising west of the French Broad River and bordered on the north by the Bowen Bridge and the west by Interstate The neighborhood, which has seen a burst of new trendy bars and eateries also experienced the highest number of reported rapes last year and was one of two places tied for the highest number of robberies after downtown, according to the Citizen-Times analysis.

Downtown residents argue that they, too, live in a neighborhood and deserve more law enforcement help. Police have said adding a new downtown unit will help other neighborhoods by freeing up officers who are routinely pulled into the city center from surrounding areas. Downtown, a half-square mile bursting with tourists, locals and commuters, led the city by dramatic margins in non-domestic aggravated assaults, with 26, and robberies, with 23, according to the Citizen-Times count. Police data analysts put the assault number even higher at It wasn’t immediately clear what the difference was, though department analysts noted that neighborhood borders might differ according to who was defining them — police, for example, or neighborhood groups made up of residents.

Another quirk of the data is that the state and federal government track crime by number of victims, while Asheville police in this case tracked crime by number of incidents. That allows for better resource allocation, they said. Asheville in saw more incidents of serious violent crime committed than in any year since at least Last year represented a 17 percent increase in violent crimes over Hillcrest, a North Asheville subsidized housing complex walled off from other parts of the city by the river and interstates had the second-highest number of non-domestic assaults with nine, while there were seven apiece in East West Asheville and its smaller neighbor Pisgah View, a subsidized complex also with the housing authority.

In terms of robberies, East West Asheville and Deaverview, the housing authority complex farthest to the west, had the second-most with six each. But downtown saw no homicides in Deaverview, which had become known as an increasingly violent place, had three. In terms of rapes, there were two reported downtown, compared to East West Asheville’s five, with another two near the neighborhood’s borders. The next highest number, four, occurred in the South French Broad neighborhood which borders downtown to the south.

Police, though, said their data differed on South French Broad, and showed the rapes outside the neighborhood border. Because police declined to give exact addresses, it was difficult to explain the discrepancy. Homicides reached a nearly decade-long high with nine in From , the annual number ran between three and seven.

Those killings last year were mostly scattered among two city regions. Asheville’s more affluent areas to north of downtown saw three homicides in three neighborhoods: Albemarle Park, Grace and North Downtown. There were none in the fast-growing south of the city dominated by commercial strips or the more remote east which includes Haw Creek.

The most, six, occurred in the west. One murder happened in Hazel Green to the north of Patton Avenue, one was farther west on the block of Old Haywood Road and one was in the far west area of Sand Hill. The remaining three were in Deaverview, which found itself in the crosshairs of Asheville’s worst violence. Half of Deaverview’s residents are children. Some parents responded to an increase in shootings by making their children stay inside and having them sleep on the floor to avoid stray bullets.

Reed said she was concerned about public safety in outlying poorer areas of the city, “not just the tourists and the people who live in the nicer neighborhoods, but where is our responsibility to everyone?

Adam Chase, who’s lived in East West Asheville for eight years and Baltimore before that said he’s not comfortable with his wife on the street at night. Chase and other East West Asheville residents interviewed said they weren’t aware of the five reported rapes in their neighborhood, despite active interest in neighborhood crime and a group that meets with a community resource officer.

Rapes are a type of crime with the least available data. While the city makes it easy to map crimes through its website simplicity. Police pushed back against Citizen-Times requests for details on the 46 rape incidents. Department spokeswoman Christina Hallingse said they wouldn’t give addresses or other details “to protect the privacy of the victim. Providing the information would trigger a lengthy notification process for each victim, according to police policies, Hallingse said.
